Join Us for a Free Calhoun County Collaborative Virtual Training

05/20/22 from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (EST). This event will present national guest speakers: Dr. Vanessa Guyton (8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.) on Combating Biases in Supporting Victims of Sexual Assault, Myra Strand, MA (10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.) on Trauma Informed Response & Care of Sexual Assault Victims, Dr. Jeremy Norwood (1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.) on Human Trafficking-Types, Venues, Causes & Indicators, and Victim Support; Joyce Haskett is a survivor of human trafficking, she will share her life-story of being trafficked.

Panel Discussion will follow (4:00-4:30 p.m.).

SPEAKER BIOS:

Dr. Vanessa Guyton will provide a training on sexual assault focused on the impact personal and professional biases can have, and how to identify and manage those biases to avoid re-traumatization of sexual assault survivors. Dr. Guyton is an award-winning speaker, trainer, author, and survivor advocate. Her success is rooted in delivering personalized presentations, while providing expert guidance and support.

Myra Strand will provide a training on sexual assault focused on trauma informed response and care due to impact and effects of trauma. Myra has an MA in applied sociology with an emphasis on issues of violence, social change, and sexual violence. She works in partnership with Russell Strand, a national expert in sexual assault. Together they founded and manage Strand Squared, LLC. Myra provides a human centric, trauma informed and healing inspired service delivery.

Dr. Jeremy Norwood and Joyce Haskett will co-present on human trafficking. Dr. Norwood is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Global Studies, and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University. Dr. Norwood is extremely involved in the movement to address human trafficking in Michigan. He has helped to train thousands of professionals on human trafficking per the requirements by the State of Michigan. Joyce Haskett is a survivor of human trafficking and will share her life-story of being trafficked.

SAVE THE DATE: Domestic Violence Training

October 6, 2022, from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (EST) the SADVHT Training Committee will present The Last Warning Shot with Casey Gwinn from Alliance for Hope International; he will provide a training on strangulation in the context of domestic violence.

There is no charge to participate in the 2-day virtual professional development event. Training for Calhoun County professionals is graciously sponsored by the Miller Foundation.

The training committee was formed from Calhoun County Courts, Defense Logistics Agency, Michigan State Police, Oaklawn, Safe Place, Sexual Assault Services-Bronson Battle Creek, and VA Medical Center.
